1BUG OUT: Cricket Shelter
This white, spiky pod (above) is no art installation. Rather, it houses and raises about 22,000 crickets, which are eventually ground up into powder to be eaten.
Designed by architectural firm Terreform ONE, the bug farm is capitalizing on the recent foodie trend of cricket powder as a protein alternative. The structure holds 264 insect pods, and has giant quills to provide ventilation. Terreform ONE co-founder Mitchell Joachim hopes this dome will encourage NYC restaurants to incorporate cricket powder on their menus. In the meantime, you can see what it all looks like.
