The Brooklyn Navy Yard was one of the most active shipyards in America. During World War II, the shipyard was pivotal in the American war effort and played host to warships including the Essex-class carrier USS Bon Homme Richard, the very first ship of its class built at the yard (right). The Navy Yard became a commercial shipyard in 1967, and ceased producing ships in 1979. In 2014, the entirety of the yard was declared a historic district.
