Big money gives Vernon big push
The Giants were done, having wrapped up an hourlong first training camp practice Friday, but Olivier Vernon was not.
He left the cool and covered workout in the field house, went out into the sun and humidity and ran sprints on the outdoor grass field, with no teammates anywhere to be seen.
“Just conditioning purposes to get it right,’’ Vernon said. “It’s going to be a nice, long season.’’
Was this an attempt by Vernon to impress his new team and teammates?
“I have been doing that since I started,’’ he said.
The extra work certainly did not hurt Vernon’s reputation, which was that of an extremely hard worker during his days with the Dolphins. He was the biggest of the big-ticket free agents signed by the Giants, receiving a massive $85 million deal to move in as a passrushing and run-stopping defensive end.
The money was staggering and Vernon knows it.
“I don’t think football changes when you get money,’’ Vernon said.
But it does change the expectations of others.
“I mean, I already know that,’’ he said. “I would be a fool not to believe that, but as long as I stick to my game plan I will be all right.’’
This was the first-ever training camp practice for Ben McAdoo as a head coach, but he did not attach any special significance to the moment. “No,’’ he said flatly. “It’s practice.’’ … The Giants will be in pads for the first time on Tuesday. … Rookie Darian Thompson, as he did in the spring, lined up with the starting defense at free safety. … Eli Manning said McAdoo told him to “slow it down a little bit’’ when the veteran quarterback was setting too fast of a pace in practice.
