Fitz sharp on Day 2

- By BART HUBBUCH

So much for Ryan Fitzpatrick being overly rusty.

The veteran quarterback’s lengthy offseason absence from the Jets didn’t appear to hurt him on the second day of training camp Friday as Fitzpatrick completed 23 of his 26 passes in non-individual drills and generally looked like he had never missed a day.

The only down note was an interception by Buster Skrine that Fitzpatrick threw in a late hurry-up situation. Overall, though, he looked good enough to receive what amounts to praise from coach Todd Bowles — a man reluctant to dish it out.

“He completed some balls,” Bowles said when asked about Fitzpatrick’s day. “There were not as many interceptions, but it was Day 2, so I expected him to be sharper than he was [Thursday].”

Backup Geno Smith also had a good day, completing three long throws with the highlight being a deep connection with Kyle Williams.

Fellow backups Bryce Petty and rookie Christian Hackenberg weren’t nearly as sharp, but Bowles said it was “conceivable” the Jets could make the extraordinary move — at least in the age of the salary cap — of keeping four quarterbacks on the regular-season roster.

“It all depends on the strengths and weaknesses of other positions,” Bowles said. “We have pretty good competition at about five positions, now, at least.”

Following Bowles’ comments about keeping four QBs, general manager Mike Maccagnan indicated Smith’s job is safe despite Smith saying Thursday that he was “pissed off ” by Fitzpatrick’s re-signing.

“I would assume so,” Maccagnan said “Right now, I know we like Geno Smith. It’s going to be interesting to see how this camp unfolds because he’s had a very good offseason.”
