Headley upset over play time

- By DAN MARTIN

SEATTLE — Joe Girardi decided to keep red-hot Ronald Torreyes in the lineup Wednesday after another three-hit game on Tuesday.

And Torreyes singled in the Yankees 5-0 win over the Mariners, but it meant that Chase Headley was on the bench again.

“He’s just playing so well and swinging the bat well, it’s hard to ignore,’’ Girardi said before the game. “If he continues to hit like this, I’m gonna have to find ways to play him.”

And that could leave Headley with more days off. He missed two games following an off day to start this West Coast trip as he dealt with a sore Achilles.

But both Girardi and Headley said his Achilles is better. Headley wasn’t thrilled about the news.

“Those two days in Anaheim, I felt good after the off day, but [Girardi] decided he wanted to do it anyway,” Headley said. “I had a tough couple of games after that.”

He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the finale against the Angels and then had a hit, but two more strikeouts versus the Mariners on Monday. He sat out the last two games.

“It is what it is,” Headley said. “You can’t play when you’re not in there and as an everyday player, I think the more you don’t play, the harder it gets. Hopefully I get a chance to get back in there soon and get on a little bit of a run again.”

Headley, who is batting .253 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs, had recovered from a brutal first five weeks of the season.

“[Girardi] knows I want to play, but it’s not about me, it’s about the Yankees,” Headley said. “[Torreyes] has played great. I just want to play.”

Bryan Mitchell (foot) was activated from the 60-day DL and optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He could return to the Yankees before the end of the season.

With Wednesday’s win, Girardi became the sixth manager in franchise history to get to 800 wins (800-622).

“It’s nice, but let’s get to 801,” Girardi said.

➤ Aaron Hicks went 7-for-14 against the Mariners and Girardi said he will remain in the lineup, filling in at all three outfield positions.
