‘Ring’ of truth in total drivel

-

AMERICAN Claressa Shields won the middleweight women’s boxing gold at the 2012 Olympics then again, in Rio de Janeiro. Fabulous. Speaks for itself.

But then all-sports ESPN got hold of it. It reported that she’s the first American boxer, “male or female,” to win gold medals at two Games. Wake up! Women’s Olympic boxing began in 2012, thus Shields won two straight at the first opportunity.

American men who won gold turned pro. Joe Frazier, Pernell Whitaker, Oscar de la Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Cassius Clay/ Muhammad Ali, Leon Spinks, Mark Breland and more.

Not only does ESPN consistently demonstrate that it has no contextual knowledge of sports and sports data, it remains eager to parade its ignorance.

➤ After nine years as a roving reporter/kibitzer/intruder for NFL games on FOX, Tony Siragusa is out. Not his fault; his assigned role was a bad idea from the start, one FOX could not or did not improve upon.

➤ Former Yankee and Red Sox Kevin Youkilis is returning to the University of Cincinnati — online campus — to complete his business degree. “I want to say I’m a college graduate,” he told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I wasn’t just an athlete.”

➤ NBC’s Olympics were like watching Yankees home games. All those empty seats were treated as if we didn’t notice.

➤ Although new Rutgers football coach Chris Ash claimed he wants to restore traditional red and white uniforms to the Scarlet Knights — imagine! — Rutgers this season will wear at least one “black out” uniform. Apparently Ash and RU still must act on Nike dollars and sense.
