Terry eyes rest for deGrom

- By MIKE PUMA

ST. LOUIS — The Mets’ updated “to do” list contains an item they wouldn’t have expected just over a week ago: Get Jacob deGrom right.

With the ace righty struggling, manager Terry Collins is considering extra rest for deGrom, who is scheduled to face the Marlins on Monday at Citi Field.

DeGrom had a second straight brutal performance Wednesday, when he lasted only 4 2/3 innings against the Cardinals and allowed five runs on 12 hits. It followed a career-worst appearance, against the Giants, in which he allowed eight runs on 13 hits over five innings. Overall this season deGrom is 7-7 with a 2.96 ERA in 23 starts.

With no indications deGrom has a physical ailment, team brass is grappling for answers.

“It looks like he is getting run down,” Collins said before the Mets faced the Cardinals on Thursday at Busch Stadium. “I don’t know if we need to move him back, push him back or whatever it might be, but we need to consider certainly getting him some rest.”

But the Mets are already stretched thin, with Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman in the rotation as Steven Matz and Jon Niese sit on the disabled list. Lugo started Thursday night in an important series finale against the Cardinals, and Gsellman is scheduled to make his first major league start Sunday, against the Phillies.

Niese was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday that will likely end his season, and the Mets are hoping Matz can return Tuesday from the shoulder tightness that landed him on the disabled list this week.

DeGrom matched a career-high by surrendering three homers in his loss to the Cardinals and later downplayed the idea he needs extra rest.

“These last two were frustrating, but I’ve got another one [Monday], so I have to get ready for that one,” deGrom said. “I don’t feel tired at all.”
