Cessa’s second start also dominant

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

Two major league starts, two strong six-inning performances and two victories.

Luis Cessa, the one-time Mets prospect, is making a good impression in The Bronx.

The right-hander allowed two Manny Machado home runs, and nothing else, helping the Yankees begin a big three-game series against the Orioles with a 14-4 thumping at the Stadium on Friday. Cessa (4-0), who previously pitched out of the bullpen this year for the Yankees, allowed five hits, three runs and struck out five over six innings. It wasn’t nearly as dominant as his previous start, when he shut out the Angels over six innings, but it was nonetheless effective.

“I thought he mixed his pitches extremely well tonight,” manager Joe Girardi said. “I didn’t think his fastball command was as good as it was in Anaheim, but he found a way to navigate through a pretty tough lineup.”

The 24-year-old was acquired by the Yankees in December in a trade involving reliever Justin Wilson. He was initially traded by the Mets as part of the Yoenis Cespedes package last July.

Catcher Brian McCann wasn’t in The Bronx on Friday night, after his grandmother passed away, and he could miss Saturday’s game, too. Without McCann, Girardi used Chase Headley at designated hitter, and gave Ronald Torreyes his third straight start at third base. The 23-year-old utility infielder had a big road trip, with nine hits in 15 at-bats and four doubles, and had two more hits and scored two runs in the big victory.

“You look at what he did on this road trip, he’s played himself into playing more,” Girardi said. “We’ve always loved the way he goes about his business, and how prepared he is. We’re never worried about putting him in [any] situation, that it’s going to be too much for him.”

Right-hander Ben Heller made his big league debut, throwing a scoreless inning of relief. ... Rookie right fielder Aaron Judge, who entered Friday’s game in a 1-for-18 rut, had a double and scored two runs. ... Orioles center fielder Adam Jones left the game in the second inning with a left hamstring strain.
