Ruggiano reinjures shoulder

- By FRED KERBER

On the surface all was well for the Mets. Bartolo Colon pitched deep into Friday’s game and won. The offensive slugged four homers in a 9-4 win over the Phillies. But there are issues.

Center fielder Justin Ruggiano’s shoulder for example. And Jay Bruce’s slump.

“We’ve still got things to make sure we address and stay on top of,” manager Terry Collins said. “Ruggiano’s an issue. We got to get Jay going. It’s not all a cakewalk.”

Collins said Ruggiano swung and felt “a sharp pain” in his left shoulder, which he injured while diving in his very first game with the Mets. Bruce, who exited Wednesday’s game and sat Thursday with a bum calf, struck out four times Friday.

“It’s kind of gradually getting a little bit more sore. I felt something after my first swing again. I’ve been dealing with it for a couple days. We’ll see the doctor and I’ll be able to tell you more tomorrow,” said Ruggiano, who came out after the fifth inning and admitted raising his arm is a chore.

Steven Matz (left shoulder tightness) is eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday — but probably would not pitch until Wednesday. He played catch Friday.

“He is not going to throw off the mound until probably Sunday,” Collins said, meaning he would pitch “probably Wednesday if he throws Sunday.”

Seth Lugo likely will pitch Tuesday.

In his previous 21 games (dating to July 27) entering Friday, Neil Walker was scintillating offensively for the Mets. It would take something very special to make him walk away from that.

Well, Nora Vail Walker is just that. Walker became a father for the first time after wife Niki gave birth to the couple’s daughter Tuesday morning in Pittsburgh.

After being activated off the paternity list Friday, Walker hoped to pick up right where he left off.

“Usually you miss a couple days, you need a couple at bats to get your timing back. But obviously the routine’s the same,” said Walker who was 1-for-3 with a run scored Friday.
