I was duped: suit
A Manhattan lawyer thought he’d scored a great deal on an Airbnb rental for the summer, one listed as a “Comfortable Spacial Island Retreat” — albeit on Roosevelt Island.
But he was “horrified” to find he had agreed to pay $9,000 for a dilapidated apartment in a drug-ridden, lowincome building, according to his new suit against Airbnb and the host, former Victoria’s Secret model Lyndsey Scott (bottom inset).
Shearman & Sterling associate Christian Pugaczewski (top inset), 38, who splits his time between New York and California, booked the rental for July and August.
The listing described the one-bedroom as “comfy yet modern” with “plenty of necessary amenities.”
Based on the description, Pugaczewski believed the unit was located in the luxury Riverwalk condominium.
When he received the 540 Main St. address just before his move-in date, he learned that the apartment was actu- June, ally at the nearby Eastwood complex, a rundown development recently converted from federally subsidized housing.
“I stayed there one night and left immediately,” Pugaczewski said.
“There was paint peeling. There was grime and dirt on the window sill and on the air conditioner. A hole in the floor was covered up by strategically placed bar stools,” he said.
Pugaczewski is suing Scott and Airbnb.
He bailed on the pad after putting down a $3,000 deposit and had to pay $20,000 for a lastminute replacement, his Manhattan civil suit says.
A woman who answered Scott’s phone but declined to identify herself said, “I’m sorry, I can’t comment on any of that.”
A spokesman for Airbnb said, “It is not our policy to comment on specific pending litigation.”
“In very rare instances like this, we encourage guests to reach out to our 24-hour customer-service help line to resolve their issues promptly,” the spokesman added.
