Dancing to Redemption?

-

After 22 successful seasons of “Dancing with the Stars,” you have to figure the producers know what they’re doing by welcoming Ryan Lochte to Season 23. Or is it finally “jump the shark” time?

Lochte, after all, is probably the world’s most notorious bad boy at the moment — having been caught in a flat-out lie about being held at gunpoint when he’d actually just trashed a Rio gas-station bathroom with some fellow Olympic swimmers.

Perhaps the DWTS folks opted to finally offer a classic reality-TV villain. Or maybe they’re hoping for a tale of redemption.

That’s how Lochte’s talking: “The past two weeks have been the lowest point in my life. . . But the fans, my family, my friends, they’ve all been really positive, keeping me going,” he said. “And that’s what I want to do. And this is perfect with the show, be- cause I want to put that behind me.”

He’ll get the chance at just that, one bejeweled shirt and Paso Doble step at a time.

Nor will he be the first DWTSer looking to move beyond scandal. Ex-Speaker Tom DeLay plainly aimed for just that in Season Nine, as did chef Paula Deen just last fall.

With most of his endorsement deals gone, Lochte doesn’t have much to lose — except the entitled frat-boy attitude that brought him low. And as a world-class athlete, he might be able to wow the crowd with his moves . . . if he “has the rhythm.”

On the other hand, many viewers are ready to boo. Twitter’s already full of comments like “I’m all about Ryan Lochte joining DWTS, because America can come together and vote him off in the first round.”

It’s a tough crowd, Ryan. Better give it your all.
