U.S. OPEN NOTES

-

Though there always have been high expectations for Querrey he has never gotten beyond the fourth round of his national championship.

“I definitely had some [high expectations] for myself, but that’s how it goes,” said Querrey, who hurt his back in Toronto just two weeks after Wimbledon.

But Tipsarevic was too much. The 32-year-old Serbian had been in the top 10, but fell out of form with numerous injuries. On Tuesday, he was apt in his defense, especially against Querrey’s big serve, holding him to just 18 aces.

Andy Murray got off to an easy start at the U.S. Open in his attempt to become the fourth man in the Open era to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a single season.

The No. 2-seeded Murray beat Lukas Rosol 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to get to the second round.

Only Novak Djokovic (last season), Roger Federer (2004, 2006 and 2007) and

Rod Laver (1969, when he completed a calendar-year Grand Slam) have been to a season’s four major title matches since the professional era began in 1968. Top-seeded American

Steve Johnson rallied from two sets down to defeat Evg

eny Donskoy in a five-setter at the Grandstand. Johnson, seeded No. 19, survived five match points in the third set en route to a 4-6, 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-3 victory.
