Isner rallies again

- By BRETT CYRGALIS and BRIAN LEWIS

John Isner made it interesting again — and again managed to pull through.

The towering 6-foot-10 American from North Carolina used his monster serve to eventually overpower his second-round opponent, Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis, winning 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (12-10), 6-3 on Wednesday.

It was looking shaky after Isner blew a long third-set tiebreaker, but he regained control in taking the fourth set behind his monster serve. It was still an easier go for Isner compared to the opening round, when he lost the first two sets to fellow American Frances Tiafoe before coming back to win in a fifth-set tiebreaker.

“Certainly feel like you’re playing with house money at that point,” Isner said.

The retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium was used for the first time during the second-round match between Rafael Nadal and An

dreas Seppi. Play was suspended at 10:38:58 p.m. for just 7:22, with the roof taking 5:35 to close. The closing occurred prior to Nadal serving at 3-3 in the second set.

Nadal, who beat Seppi 6-0, 7-5, 6-1, earned the distinction of being the first to hit a practice ball and a match ball under the closed roof. Afterwards, he was prodded to try to hit a ball off the roof, but fell a few feet short.

A man was handcuffed, arrested and charged for running onto Court 13 and approaching Kateryna Bond

arenko after the Ukrainian’s second-round win over Sa

isai Zheng. He was stopped by USTA security and arrested by an NYPD officer. Roberta Vinci remains an American killer. After ending Serena Williams’ bid for a sweep of the Grand Slams last year at the U.S. Open, the No. 7-seed beat New Jersey’s Christina

McHale, of Teaneck, N.J., in the second round 6-1, 6-3, at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
