Wife role in bike slam

Former Mayor David Dinkins insisted Saturday he was rushing his wife to the emergency room when his Cadillac collided with a bicycle deliveryman on the Upper East Side two months ago.

Responding to a new personalinjury lawsuit filed by injured biker Rodrigo Garcia, Dinkins, 89, said he had no clue he’d hit anything until someone ran up to his car a half-block later, on York Avenue, and told him.

At the time, his wife, Joyce (inset with Dinkins), was having serious heart issues, a source close to the retired pol said.

Garcia, 32, of The Bronx, is accusing Dinkins in Manhattan Supreme Court of being a heedless, hit-and-run driver.

Garcia’s bike and Dinkins’ sedan collided practically under Dinkins’ driver-side window, causing Garcia to break his ankle, according to the accident report reviewed by The Post.

But Dinkins said he’s just a good husband.

“As a result of her examination, her physician directed her to go to the New York-Presbyterian emergency room on East 68th Street for immediate treatment. I, of course, said I would drive Joyce to the hospital right away.

“As we neared the hospital on York Avenue, a man came up to my car window and told me my car had been hit by a bicycle about a half a block away.ay. It was the first time I was aware of any suchh incident. I told the mann that my wife was in medical distress and that we were on the way to the emergency room a short distance away, but that I would return to the area he described once I got her into the ER.”

Dinkins said he did so, fully cooperating with cops, who interviewed him at the hospital. The exmayor will not be charged, a lawenforcement source told The Post.

Neighbors of Dinkins were shocked to learn he still drives.

“I’ve never seen him driving. He’s old. He walks with a stick. He has a driver. I’ve seen them come and pick him up,” said one.

Another neighbor said, “I saw him driving the Cadillac. I was saying to myself, ‘He’s old. He shouldn’t be driving.’ ”

Dinkins went to the US Open Saturday — via chauffered car.
