Ospreys ‘hurri’ to NYC
Hurricane Hermine was anything but an ill wind for two unintentionally seafaring birds — who got a free cruise to New York City.
The incredible journey of the two ospreys (one, inset) began when they were blown out to sea off North Carolina.
They landed on the luxury cruise ship Norwegian Gem on Friday and got a free ride to New York, including gourmet meals (for birds) and private accommodations (in cardboard boxes in the galley).
When the ship docked on the West Side, they were handed over to state environmental officials, who escorted them to the Wild Bird Fund’s headquarters on the Upper West Side.
“I think they just landed like any port in a storm,’’ said the fund’s director, Rita McMahon. “One is very tired,’’ she said, but added the ingrate was not too tired to bite her.
She described the other as “ready to kill’’ someone.
On Sunday, they’ll continue their adventure by traveling to the Raptor Trust in New Jersey.
