WNBA: Charles hits milestone in Liberty rout

Tina Charles scored 23 points, including the 4,000th of her career, to help the Liberty beat Phoenix, 92-70, on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Charles, who also had 15 rebounds, became the sixth fastest player in WNBA history to reach that milestone and moved the Liberty (20-9) closer to clinching at least the third seed in the playoffs. Brittany Boyd finished with a season-high 19 points for the Liberty.

MLS: Wright-Phillips’ 17th goal enough for Red Bulls

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored in the 50th minute and the Red Bulls beat the Vancouver Whitecaps, 1-0, on Saturday in Vancouver, British Columbia, to extend their club-record unbeaten streak to 10 games.

The Red Bulls (12-9-7) moved into a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with Toronto FC. Wright-Phillips scored his 17th goal to tie for the MLS scoring lead.

MLB: Bumgarner outduels Arrieta in Giants victory

Madison Bumgarner outpitched Jake Arrieta with 10 strikeouts over six innings, and the Giants pounced on rare miscues by the Cubs in a 3-2 victory Saturday in Chicago. Bumgarner allowed two runs and five hits in his fourth victory in his past five starts. Arrieta was charged with three runs — two earned — and four hits in six innings in his first loss since July 30.

Rick Porcello didn’t allow a baserunner until a one-out double in the sixth on the way to his majors-leading 19th victory, and the Red Sox routed the Athletics 11-2 in Oakland, Calif. David Ortiz hit a two-run double to highlight a seven-run third. Boston is now tied with Toronto atop the AL East.

GOLF: Chappell grabs one-shot lead at Deutsche Bank

Kevin Chappell shot 7-under 64 for a one-shot lead Saturday in the Deutsche Bank Championsh­ip in Norton, Mass., and another chance at his first PGA Tour victory. He was at 11-under 131, one shot ahead of PGA champion Jimmy Walker (64) and Paul Casey (66).

Scott Hend shot a 5-under 65 to lead by one stroke after the European Masters third round in Crans-Montana, Switzerlan­d. Hend’s bogey on the par-4 18th, the only blemish of his round, left him at 13 under. Playing partner Alex Noren finished one stroke behind.

Ariya Jutanugarn shot a 6-under 66 in the LPGA Manulife Classic, leaving her two strokes back in her bid win three straight events for the second time this season. She is chasing Mi Hyang Lee and Hjo Joo Kim at 14under 202 at Whistle Bear.

HORSE RACING: Marauder, Racing Hill win big at Yonkers

Yonkers Raceway hosted a pair of Triple Crown races Saturday night and when they hit the wire the $500,000 Yonkers Trot went to Marion Marauder while the $500,000 Messenger Stakes was won by Racing Hill. Marion Marauder (1-5 favorite), driven by Scott Zeron and trained by

Paula Wellwood, won the second jewel in the Trotting Triple Crown over Smalltownt­hrowdown in 1:56 1/5. Marion Marauder paid $2.40 to win.

Racing Hill (1-9 favorite), driven by Brett Miller and trained by Tony Alagna, cruised to a 1 ¹/4 -length victory over Stonebridg­e Beach in 1:53. Racing Hill paid $2.10 in winning the second jewel in the Pacing Triple Crown.
