Tiger sought golf 'date with HRC
With the world closing in on him after his Thanksgiving 2009 blow-up with his wife, Tiger Woods startled aides to Hillary Clinton by asking for a meeting about an annual charity golfing tournament, e-mails reveal.
Coming just two weeks after the golfer crashed his SUV during a fierce fight with Elin Nordegren over his infidelities, the request dumbfounded the Clinton team, with one aide feeling compelled to note it was not a joke.
“Tiger Woods wants to speak to her regarding the congo. For real,” the Clinton Foundation’s Doug Band wrote to Huma Abedin, Clinton’s top aide at the State Department, in a Dec. 12, 2009, e-mail, among a new batch obtained by the conservative group Citizens United.
“Congo” appears to be a refer- ence to the Congressional Country Club golf course in Bethesda, Md., where Woods had held annual charity golf tournaments.
“Honest to betsy,” Abedin wrote back, shocked Woods was reaching out to the then-secretary of state as his marriage was crumbling amid a flurry of revelations about his serial philandering.
“Don’t discuss with hrc until we speak,” Band warned Abedin, referring to Clinton by her initials.
Abedin didn’t need much convincing.
“Uh, hello,” she replied, “U think I’m crazy.”
It’s not clear whether the meeting ever took place, but in 2010, Woods held his charity fundraiser in Pennsylvania, not at the Congressional course.
Woods and Nordegren divorced that year.
