Reporter: Saudi Skeptics Gain Strength in Congress

- — compiled by Eric Fettmann

Last week’s vote by 27 senators against an arms deal with Saudi Arabia is a sign that “lawmakers in both parties are growing more skeptical” about Washington’s ties to Riyadh, reports Rebecca Kheel in The Hill. That puts them more in line with President Obama, who until now “had been seen as taking a lonely stance as the Saudi skeptic-in-chief.” And it comes as Congress prepares to override his veto of the anti-Saudi Justice Against Supporters of Terrorism Act. The chief immediate issue: the war in Yemen. “In addition to civilian casualties, lawmakers fear the chaos has allowed for the growth of ISIS and al Qaeda, and that Saudi Arabia’s strikes are targeting neither group.”
