From the left: Don’t Bet on Hillary Being a Hawk

-

Stephen M. Walt says conventional wisdom is that a President Hillary Clinton would be more willing than Barack Obama “to use military force to advance US objectives in various corners of the world.” But he has his doubts — and he certainly hopes he’s right. Writing in Foreign Policy, he says that if she “wants her presidency to succeed, the last thing she’ll do is embrace the failed strategy of ‘liberal hegemony’ in anything more than a rhetorical sense.” For one thing, he notes, there’s no money for it. For another, the US public is war-weary. And finally, Bill Clinton will probably warn her away from it. Sure, she’ll sound tough, “but if she’s smart, it will be mostly talk, and not a lot of action.”
