Jets claim recently arrested former Bucs TE

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

The Jets, desperate for a pass-catching tight end, claimed talented, yet troubled third-year pro Austin Seferian-Jenkins off waivers from the Buccaneers, the team announced Monday.

The move comes just three days after he was arrested for his second DUI and subsequently waived by the Buccaneers.

In each of his first two seasons, the 6-foot-5, 262pound Seferian-Jenkins caught 21 passes and a combined six touchdowns, though he appeared in only 16 games because of injury problems. In two games this year, the former University of Washington star and 2014 second round pick had three receptions for 44 yards and a score. Those numbers certainly beat what the Jets have at tight end.

A player at that position has yet to catch a pass for the Jets, who are the only team in the league to have received no production from a tight end. They cut former second round pick Jace Amaro following training camp. Former Jet Jeff Cumberland led all Jets tight ends last year with five catches for 77 yards.

Seferian-Jenkins, 23, was kicked out of a Buccaneers practice in August by coach Dirk Koetter for not knowing where to line up, and subsequently lashed out on Twitter. And in the early morning hours Friday, he was arrested for a DUI. According to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, he was driving between 75 and 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. The release said Seferian-Jenkins’s vehicle then cut off the trooper’s cruiser and began weaving back and forth.

In a video obtained by TMZ, it shows Seferian-Jenkins talking to the officers with a slurred speech, and telling them while in custody: “I got to take a huge s– t. Am I good to take a s–t?” When the officer implores not to do so, he says: “Not me, I’m not that f–ked up. I’m not gonna s–t near you car. But when we get there, can I take a s–t?”

He was charged with DUI and violation of an ignition interlock device restriction. He refused a breathalyzer test at the Hillsborough County Jail.

It was his second DUI, after he was arrested March 9 of 2013 in Seattle. He pleaded guilty, served a day in jail and was suspended one game by the University of Washington.

To make room on the roster for Seferian-Jenkins, the Jets waived linebacker Julian Stanford.
