All the Mayor’s Men
Is anyone in charge at City Hall? Clearly no one with any competence, judging from Thursday’s City Council hearing on the Rivington House nursinghome flap, as well as the transcript of what First Deputy Mayor Tony Shorris told investigators about the sale.
At the hearing, Shorris said he wanted the site to remain a health-care facility — but for some reason (how should he know why?) his fellow staffers lifted deed restrictions, paving the way for a new owner to put up luxury condos. And for a de Blasio donor to snag an instant $72 million profit.
In an interview with the city Comptroller’s Office, Shorris said something similar. Yet in two dozen-plus instances, he told that investigator he just can’t recall the details.
Really? Why is someone with such a weak memory “in charge” of dozens of city agencies? And if he’s lying, what is he trying to cover up? Perhaps US Attorney Preet Bharara (who’s also investigating the case) will get the answers.
For now, let’s take Mayor de Blasio’s No. 2 at his word: Shorris says he wasn’t aware of the specifics until after the sale was done, and that he never even bothered to read memos noting plans to lift the restrictions.
“At the beginning of the administration, nobody knew anybody,” he said. “We had never worked together in this environment.” Reason to read a few memos, isn’t it?
Stringer found 40 staffers, “including toplevel deputy mayors,” involved in the Rivinton decision, yet no one stopped the deal. Or even, supposedly, told the mayor about it.
Of course, the mayor’s aides were racing to please SEIU 1199, the powerful healthcare union (also one of de Blasio’s top donors). The union wanted a quick sale in large part so it could collect $18 million in pension payments the facility owed it. And what the union wants, the union gets.
Sure, it’s easy to believe Team de Blasio’s left hand didn’t know what its far-left hand was doing, given the mayor’s real priorities: boosting his national profile, working out at the gym, sleeping in . . .
Heck, City Hall even flubbed Thursday’s hearing logistics: It told the council that Shorris had to leave after a few hours for a conference in Oklahoma. But Shorris had no such plans — and when asked about it, was overheard wondering where the idea had come from. Seems Team de Blasio can’t even get its lies straight. (City Hall aides later denied telling the council that Shorris was flying to Oklahoma. So who did?)
Here’s the scariest part of it all: Total incompetence is the kindest explanation for Team de Blasio shenanigans.
