Visitor: Love of NYC stifled without ‘Air’

- By SVANHVÍT TRYGGVADÓTTIR mlicea@nypost.com

Travelers are rethinking trips to the Big Apple now that Gov. Cuomo and the Legislature have approved a law that effectively puts Airbnb out of business by banning apartment-rental ads for stays of under 30 days. Svanhvít Tryggvadóttir, 37, of Reykjavik, Iceland, who frequently travels to the city with her family for her husband’s business trips, tells The Post’s

Melkorka Licea that the crippling new law enacted Friday means less time as a family.

THE five of us come to New York City a lot for my husband’s work. We usually stay two weeks or longer. We always use Airbnb. Staying in a hotel is insanely expensive — we’d spend around $4,000 for a week in a hotel, twice the cost of Airbnb — not to mention much less comfortable.

I’m extremely disheartened the officials of such a big city have taken away the only affordable option for traveling families. This ridiculous new law means my family will spend less time together and we won’t be able to visit New York as much.

Since we have three daughters (ages 7, 12, and 18) we need a space that will accommodate all five of us.

Airbnb makes it possible for us to travel and stay together as well as feel like we are at “home” — which is important to us, since we travel so much.

By renting a whole apartment through Airbnb, we are able to make dinner for the entire family and have a relaxing breakfast together before heading into the city to explore.

Of course, we do eat out while we visit. But it’s not realistic for our family to order room service or eat out multiple times a day when staying in one place for longer than a night or two.

We spend at least a few thousand dollars on food and shopping while we are in your city.

It’s also very important to us to have a wide choice of neighborhoods. Recently, we returned from a very pleasant two-week Airbnb stay in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

We rented a large apartment wwith access to a garden. It was very comfortable. Several evenings we had a cozy movie night with our daughters as if we were at home. We could enjoy being together rather than cramped into a small hotel room.

Communication between tenants and owners is also important with Airbnb. I’ve formed close lasting friendships with several homeowners.

The owners are always very helpful with suggesting interesting places to visit and great places to eat, whereas hotel staffers just direct you to the same overrun tourist spots.

I hope New York City politicians think about what this will do to foreign families, and will come up with a better solution.

This ridiculous new law means my family . . . won’t be able to visit New York. SvanhvítTryggvadóttir
