Namath sorry for questioning Geno’s toughness

It took two days and one MRI exam of a blown-out knee for Joe Namath to apologize to Geno Smith.

The loopy Jets quarterback legend had questioned Smith’s toughness Sunday when the fourth-year passer was knocked out of the game against the Ravens with a knee in- jury then returned to the bench area in sweats. On Monday, Smith was diagnosed with a torn ACL.

“My bad Geno,” Namath wrote Tuesday on Twitter. “In the dark ages we players had the say. I hope you heal and play as long as you choose!”

Smith had said after the game that he wanted to return, but the Jets doctors would not let him. He responded to Namath on Twitter, saying: “Somebody tell Joe that the doctors have the final say on whether you can or cannot get back into the game …… and also that I love him!”

Namath had started the controversy by posting: “If you’ve got a right knee injury keeping you out of the game why are you standing on the sideline the entire 2nd half ? How bad can it be?”

Also Tuesday, Smith shared his reaction to the devastating injury, which likely ends his tenure with Gang Green. The 26-yearold is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, and the Jets have given no indication they want to bring him back.

“They say that the darkest hour is right before dawn. This is only the beginning and the future is so bright,” Smith wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to all the fans, my family and friends for all the well wishes. I’ll be back stronger, faster and smarter in no time.”
