Foreign desk: Cuba Is Now Iran’s Island in the Sun
President Obama thinks “Iran’s influence in Latin America is waning,” notes Emanuele Ottolenghi at The Hill. So he apparently “does not view the 80 or so cultural centers Iran has established across Central and South America as a threat.” But “Tehran begs to disagree”: It “views these centers as a vehicle for the spread of its revolutionary ideology to America’s backyard.” And they’ve attracted “thousands of Latin American converts who, thanks to the centers’ missionary work, flock to the regime-run Al Mostafa International University in Qom each year for indoctrination.” Now a Shiite mosque and cultural center has opened in Havana, where it is “actively recruiting and converting Cubans.” For once, he writes, Washington “should take Iran at its word.”
