Rose gets 2nd chance to finish

- By MARC BERMAN

It wasn’t the performance Derrick Rose wanted in his first time facing his former coach Tom Thibodeau.

Luckily for Rose, he doesn’t have to wait long to get a second chance as the Knicks and Timberwolves meet Friday night at the Garden in the second half of their home-andhome.

Rose, who played five seasons for Thibodeau in Chicago, got into foul trouble in the third quarter, got a little wild in the fourth quarter and ultimately got benched by Jeff Hornacek for the frantic final 3:58 of the Knicks’ 106-104 victory in Minnesota on Wednesday.

The late benching was a surprise. Rose had played well late in close games recently, but after missing an out-of-control hook shot with 3:59 left and the Knicks clinging to a five-point lead, Rose got the hook.

An all-point guard backcourt of Brandon Jennings and Rose already had let a double-digit lead slip away. Instead of removing Jennings, Rose got pulled for defensive shooting guard Justin Holiday.

“That’s something you’ll have to ask [Jeff Hornacek],’’ Rose said of the benching. “I’m just doing whatever Coach asks me to do, go in whenever he tells me. As far as him keeping me out there or letting me be out there, that’s something you’ll probably have to ask him.’’

Jennings finished with 12 points and seven assists, but was scoreless in the fourth. The Rose-Jennings tandem could prove vexing for Hornacek as far as choosing who plays in crunch time if Jennings is having a strong outing.

Rose and Jennings are playing for new contracts and want to be closers. Rose is eligible to sign a threeyear, $75 million extension on Dec. 22 — the six-month anniversary of his trade to the Knicks. The Post has reported the Knicks haven’t ruled out an extension later in the season.

Rose finished his rough night with 11 points, two assists, two turnovers and a minus-9. Jennings was a plus-8.

Courtney Lee (ankle), Joakim Noah (ankle) and Lance Thomas are listed as questionable for Friday’s Garden rematch against Minnesota, but Carmelo Anthony said Lee should rest until the Miami game Tuesday. After coming out firing and hitting his first three shots in the opening eight minutes, Lee landed on a Timberwolves player’s foot, left the contest and didn’t return. Lee said he’d know more Friday on how the ankle responds but didn’t feel confident.
