Geno agrees with mom: ‘Best’ yet to come

- By FRED KERBER

Mom knows best. Ask Geno Smith. Smith, who is rehabbing from a torn right ACL suffered Oct. 23, is probably done with the Jets, but he expects to play as an NFL quarterback again. And he takes to heart some advice his mother presented at one of his lowest points. “My mom told me something that was pretty special,” Smith said Friday after Jets practice in Florham Park. “She’d been going to my games since I was a kid and never missed a game. And these past few years, I missed more games than I missed in my life and she said, ‘There’s always a time for that, there’s always a season where you feel like things aren’t going right. And then what comes after that is usually the best part of your life.’ ”

So Smith is looking forward to those “best” times. Hey, he’s not going to argue with his mother.

After a 4-of-6 passing mark in Week 6, Smith was given a start in Week 7 against Baltimore — and suffered the injury that likely ended his Jets career. He blew out his right knee and underwent surgery Nov. 9.

Smith, who had not spoken extensively since his injury in the Baltimore game, said he is pleased with his rehab.

“I’m doing well. I’m feeling good. My rehab is coming along well. I’m three weeks into it and I’m feeling about as good as I can be at this point,” Smith said. “Been doing a lot of rehab since the day I had surgery, a lot of it obviously dealing with the right knee.

“But just recently, I started back lifting in the weight room, working on my strength and getting that back and trying to stay conditioned. Next week, I’ll be doing more and more and as the weeks go on we’ll progressively get better and better.”

While preparing for the best times, like mom said.
