GORE 'WARMS' TO THE TRUMPS
The odd couple, redefined. Environmental crusader Al Gore met Monday with President-elect Donald Trump — a climate-change skeptic — and later told reporters they had a “very productive” discussion.
The former vice president, whose 2006 documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” warned of the dangers of global warming, also chatted separately with Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who has said she wants to work on climate issues in the new administration.
“I had a lengthy and very productive session with the president-elect,” Gore said in brief remarks leaving Trump Tower.
“It was a sincere search for areas of common ground. I had a meeting beforehand with Ivanka Trump. The bulk of the time was with the presidentelect, Donald Trump. I found it an extremely interesting conversation, and to be continued, and I’m just going to leave it at that.”
The high-level sessions come days after Politico dubbed the president-elect’s eldest daughter as a possible “climate czar.”
Liberal groups are concerned Trump will roll back many of the environmental regulations enacted by President Obama.
During the campaign, Trump called climate change a “hoax.”
“Obama’s talking about all of this with the global warming, and . . . a lot of it’s a hoax. It’s a hoax. I mean, it’s a moneymaking industry, OK?” Trump said at a Dec. 30, 2015, campaign rally in Hilton Head, SC.
Campaigning with Hillary Clinton, Gore had warned at a Miami event on Oct. 11, 2016, that Trump “would take us toward a climate catastrophe” if elected president.
He campaigned for Hillary Clinton, calling her the best candidate to combat global warming.
Gore lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush. Like Clinton, he lost despite winning the popular vote.
Trump, meanwhile, was relatively quiet on Twitter Monday, posting just a couple tweets, including one in response to criticism that he spends too much time on the site.
“If the press would cover me accurately & honorably, I would have far less reason to ‘tweet.’ Sadly, I don’t know if that will ever happen!” it read.
