NCAA: Heisman finalists named

Clemson quarterbac­k Deshaun Watson is a Heisman Trophy finalist for the second consecutiv­e season, joining Louisville quarterbac­k Lamar Jackson, Michigan linebacker Jabrill Peppers and Oklahoma teammates Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook.

The finalists were announced Monday on ESPN and the award will be presented Saturday in Manhattan.

Christian Vital made two free throws with 2.2 seconds to play to give Connecticu­t a 52-50 victory over Syracuse in the Tire Pro Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Andrew White III hit a 3-pointer with 9.1 seconds left to bring Syracuse into a 50-50 tie. Rodney Purvis missed a 3 for the Huskies but Vital was fouled on the rebound. Purvis had 21 points and seven rebounds for UConn (4-4). White finished with 14 points for the Orange (5-3).

Defending national champion Villanova (8-0) move into the top spot in the AP men’s basketball poll this week after Kentucky lost to UCLA on Saturday.

NBA: Westbrook does it again

Russell Westbrook extended his streak of triple-doubles to six games, leading the Thunder to a 102-99 victory over the skidding Hawks on Monday in Atlanta. Westbrook ha 32 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, giving him the NBA’s longest streak of triple-doubles since Michael Jordan had seven in a row in 1989.

Marc Gasol had 28 points, including a game-tying 3 with seven seconds left in regulation, to go with 11 rebounds and 11 assists, and the Grizzlies beat the Pelicans 110-108 in double overtime in New Orleans. The Bulls suspended Rajon

Rondo for Monday’s 110-105 loss to the Blazers for conduct detrimenta­l to the team.

ETC.: Benoit to join Phils

According to ESPN, 39-year-old pitcher Joaquin Benoit has reportedly agreed to terms with the Philllies on a one-year, $7.5 million deal.

The Bills placed Percy Harvin on the season-ending reserve-nonfootbal­l-illness list because of migraines.
