Lagares to get shoulder checked

- By KEN DAVIDOFF

Even in the offseason, Juan Lagares’ on-the-field acrobatics have him in the trainer’s room.

The Mets’ injury-prone center fielder will undergo an evaluation Monday in New York after falling on his right shoulder while making a diving catch Saturday in a Dominican winter league game. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson wrote in a text message that the team hoped to have additional information on Lagares’ condition by Monday. Early indications are that Lagares didn’t seriously injure himself.

The Mets are counting on Lagares to be a critical piece in their center-field mix. Right now, he is the one bona fide center fielder on their major league roster. The team wants to divide its centerfield reps among Lagares, former regular center fielder Curtis Granderson (who moved to the corners in 2013 as a concession to his age) and natural corner outfielder Michael Conforto.

Lagares, who is playing for Aguilas Cibaeñas in the Dominican, registered just 79 games played for the Mets in 2016 because he partially tore a ligament in his left thumb — while making an extremely difficult catch in center field — and underwent surgery to repair it.

In 2015, Lagares played in 143 games yet found his performance compromised by an ailing right elbow.

Largely because of his health concerns, the 27year-old has been unable to reproduce the encouraging 2014 campaign (a .281/.321/ .382 slash line and a Gold Glove Award) that convinced the Mets to award him with a four-year, $23 million extension through 2019.
