Tip of hat to gritty O’Quinn
THROUGHOUT the Jim Dolan Era, even when the Knicks win, it seems more accidental than a matter of, say, taking advantage of an advantage.
Friday night on MSG, they beat the 8-15 Kings, 103-100. Carmelo Anthony, who scored 33, was given nearly all the credit, yet he has scored a lot in losses, too. That he’ll “score the basketball” is a given.
But despite what was widely reported and seen on TV and the internet as game highlights, the Knicks won because substitute forward Kyle O’Quinn gave them five extra possessions with five offensive rebounds — and a total of 11 — in just 20 minutes.
And while the credit was heaped on Anthony, consider this first-quarter episode:
Knicks’ 7-foot-3 “shooting guard” Kristaps Porzingis missed a 3-pointer that was rebounded by O’Quinn, who passed the ball to Courtney Lee, who missed a shot, also rebounded by O’Quinn, who passed to Anthony, who hit a 3.
O’Quinn gave the Knicks three possessions, three shots and eventually three points in one possession.
Yet, neither Mike Breen nor Walt Frazier seemed impressed. Frazier explained the Kings had just suffered from “very lackadaisical rebounding,” when both rebounds were long, hard-off-the-rim balls first reached by the irrepressible, presumenothing Mr. O’Quinn.
Consider, too, going into Sunday night’s game against the Lakers O’Quinn has 48 offensive rebounds on the season while averaging 20 minutes. Porzingis has 43, averaging 34 minutes.
Finally, consider that Porzingis, always the tallest man on the floor, averages nearly three times as many 3-point shots — he was one-for-five, Friday — as offensive rebounds.
