Toy ‘thief’ is NYCHA’s anti-Santa
A city Housing Authority employee shamelessly stole at least six toys intended for needy children from a holiday collection bin, police said.
MD Hossain, 40, was arrested Wednesday for swiping the donated toys, including a pink microphone and two Matchbox cars, from NYCHA’s gift box earlier this month, cops said.
He allegedly hit a collection bin three times in one day at 250 Broadway, a downtown office building that is the headquarters for many city and state agencies, including NYCHA.
Surveillance video shows him making his first trip at around noon on Dec. 1, removing several items, including the microphone and a yellow school bus, according to a criminal complaint.
He calmly walked away with the toys, only to return about two hours later and allegedly take a checkerboard set. And at 2:15 p.m., he returned a final time to take a Nerf football and the two toy cars.
Police were tipped off after someone realized there were fewer gifts in the bin than expected, prompting a thorough review of the building’s surveillance videos.
Once cops caught Hossain on camera, it took a few days to track him down.
He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with three counts of petit larceny and three counts of stolen property, and released.
