Frosh legs power ’Cats past Heels

Malik Monk scored a Kentucky freshman record 47 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 16.7 seconds left to lead the No. 6 Wildcats past No. 7 North Carolina, 103-100, on Saturday in Las Vegas in a thrilling showdown of traditiona­l powers.

North Carolina’s Justin Jackson nearly outshined Monk with 34 points, and his basket with 45 seconds left put the Tar Heels (10-2) ahead. De’Aaron Fox added 24 points for Kentucky (10-1).

Seton Hall 81, Delaware 68

Angel Delgado matched a career-high with 22 points and added 15 rebounds to lead Seton Hall over Delaware at Prudential Center. Madison Jones added 15 points for Seton Hall (9-2), which has won five in a row and moved to a perfect 4-0 at home.

Georgetown 78, Syracuse 71

L.J. Peak had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Rodney Pryor added 20 points and Georgetown beat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. The loss put a damper on what was a special day for the Orange, who were honoring their former star, the late Dwayne “Pearl” Washington, who died in April of cancer at age 52.

Butler 83, Indiana 78

In Indianapol­is, Kelan Martin scored 28 points and No. 18 Butler held off No. 9 Indiana’s late charge in the Crossroads Classic for the Bulldogs’ second upset of the Hoosiers in the past three meetings.

West Virginia 112, UMKC 67

In Morgantown, W.Va., coach Bob Huggins became the 10th coach to earn his 800th win as West Virginia used a 37-4 first-half run to cruise to the victory.

UCLA 86, Ohio State 73

In Las Vegas, Aaron Holiday and Bryce Alford each scored 20 points and No. 2 UCLA beat Ohio State to remain unbeaten at 12-0.

Purdue 86, Notre Dame 81

In Indianapol­is, Caleb Swanigan had 26 points and 10 rebounds, Vincent Edwards finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 15 Purdue escaped with an 86-81 victory over No. 21 Notre Dame.

Florida State 83, Manhattan 67

In Sunrise, Fla., Dwayne Bacon scored 16 points and Florida State dominated inside to earn its seventh consecutiv­e win in the opening game at the Orange Bowl Classic. Zavier Turner had 18 points for Manhattan (3-8), which hasn’t beaten a ranked team since 1995.

Cincinnati 119, Fairleigh Dickinson 68

In Cincinnati, Kevin Johnson scored a career-high 18 points as Cincinnati rolled to the highest-scoring game of coach Mick Cronin’s 11-year career. Stephan Jiggetts scored 24 points to lead the Knights (2-9), who have lost seven straight and eight of nine.

Providence 76, Wagner 54

In Providence, R.I., Jalen Lindsey had three 3-pointers and scored 16 points and Providence defeated Wagner for the Friars’ fifth straight win. Elijah Davis had 13 points and nine rebounds for Wagner (3-6).
