Meter beater
Parking paid via app
Drivers in Midtown will no longer have to spend an extra minute feeding the meter or worry about running back to their car before time runs out.
The city on Monday rolled out a new app that will allow motorists to pay remotely when parking in parts of Manhattan.
For now, ParkNYC — produced by Atlantabased Parkmobile — will operate only in Manhattan between 14th and 59th streets, said Department of Transportation officials, who hope to have all New York streets covered by the middle of next year.
“With ParkNYC, drivers no longer have to scramble for change or even walk to a Muni-Meter to get a receipt for their dashboard,” said DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.
“With no added fees, mobile alerts that let you know when your parking session is ending, and the ability to extend a session without returning to your car, ParkNYC offers a great convenience to New York drivers.”
App users have to start with a $25 deposit to their parking fund (which can later be replenished) and enter their license-platel number.
After parking, users plug in the zone number that is posted on the block and a length of time. That time can later be extended.
Traffic agents will be able to look up the info in a database to see if the parking fee has been paid.
