Jenkins OK, Vereen out

- —Paul Schwartz

Cornerback Janoris Jenkins escaped serious injury when he was forced out of Sunday’s 17-6 victory over Lions by an inadvertent knee to the back.

But hard-luck running back Shane Vereen is hurt, again.

Jenkins underwent a battery of tests Monday, checking for any internal damage to his organs. The tests came back negative. Jenkins no doubt will be extremely sore and, with the quick turnaround involved with playing a game Thursday night in Philadelphia, his availability is unknown.

“It was a nasty collision,’’ Ben McAdoo said. “Right now it’s a painful bruised back.’’

The Giants had a jog-through practice, thought Jenkins did not participate.

Jenkins lasted only 15 defensive snaps Sunday. He went down on the third play of the second quarter covering a pass intended for tight end Eric Ebron that fell incomplete. Jenkins was hit accidentally by teammate Trevin Wade.

Vereen missed nine games with a torn triceps, returned to face the Cowboys, but lasted only three plays before leaving with a concussion. He cleared the concussion protocol in time to play against the Lions and got two rushing attempts (for 11 yards) and two receptions (for nine yards) in 14 snaps. Vereen reinjured his triceps again, though, and his season is finished. McAdoo did not say if it was torn.

“It’s unfortunate,’’ McAdoo said.
