Petty gets misfortune cookie

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

Bryce Petty not only lucked out that the massive hit he took Saturday evening only resulted in a bruised chest. He got a free snack out of it, too.

Center Wes Johnson brought the Jets quarterback homemade chocolate chip cookies after his mistimed snap in Saturday’s loss to the Dolphins resulted in Petty getting crushed by defensive linemen Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake.

“It was a real apology, really nice,” Petty joked on Tuesday after practice. “Still owes me dinner, though.”

Petty practiced fully on Tuesday, just three days after the huge hit, and said he feels much better. X-rays after the game revealed no broken ribs, and follow-up scans Monday showed no internal damage. As long as Petty keeps progressing, coach Todd Bowles said he will start Saturday at New England.

“I couldn’t imagine the season ending that way,” Petty said. “I was really happy to see that everything was negative. Everything was good. It was a good hit — hits plural. I’ll put that [picture] in my man cave at some point.

“If I can take shots from those two dudes right there, I think I’ll be all right.”

In two starts since taking over for Ryan Fitzpatrick, Petty has completed 43-of-71 passes for 492 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Now he will get a crack at future Hall of Famer Tom Brady and the Super Bowlcontending Patriots.

Two Jets were named alternates to the Pro Bowl. Leonard Williams is a first alternate, and Sheldon Richardson is a fifth alternate.

In a surprise, the Jets placed right guard Brian Winters (shoulder) on injured reserve Tuesday night, along with outside linebacker Mike Catapano (knee), and signed offensive tackle Donald Hawkins and defensive lineman Brandin Bryant to the active roster. The Jets have now lost four of their starting offensive linemen, with Winters joining Nick Mangold (ankle), Breno Giacomini (back) and Ryan Clady (shoulder) on IR. Backup guards Dakota Dozier and Craig Watts will likely fill Winters’ spot Saturday against the Patriots.

Bowles said rookie quarterback Christian Hackenberg could be active for the first time Saturday, but it depends on what the Jets do with the back end of the roster.

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall received the Gerry E skena zi media “Good Guy” award, as voted by the team’s reporters.
