Williams not big on ‘alt’ status

Jets defensive lineman Leonard Williams generated some buzz when it came to Pro Bowl consideration, but ultimately he was not elected to the AFC roster.

Williams was named a first alternate, so he probably will end up going to Orlando for the game next month anyway, but he was hoping for the honor of being elected.

“I was a little disappointed that I was an alternate, especially knowing that I have stats as good as the guys that made it,” said Williams, who has a team-leading seven sacks. “But at the same time, I’m glad that I got that far. It is definitely a huge step for me in my second year, so I’m proud.”

Oakland’s Khalil Mack, Houston’s Jadeveon Clowney and Miami’s Cameron Wake were selected at defensive end. The Jets listed Williams as a defensive end, which may have hurt his chances of making it. Williams plays inside more and does not have the pass-rushing numbers of 4-3 defensive ends.

“Maybe a little bit,” Williams said when asked if the position listing hurt him, “because I feel like if I was listed as an interior guy, the stats I had as an interior guy stand out more than as an outside rusher. I was listed with defensive ends, but I played a lot more inside. I don’t know why I was listed as a defensive end. But I’m still excited I made it as an alternate.’’

QB Bryce Petty( chest) practiced fully on Wednesday. All indications are he will be fine to start Saturday against the Patriots after taking that huge hit from Wake and Ndamukong Suh last week.

RB Matt Forte did not practice Wednesday. In addition to the knee injury he has been dealing with, Forte also has a shoulder injury suffered against the Dolphins. Forte is unsure if he will be able to play Saturday. Bowles said RG Brian Winter s could need shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. Winters was placed on seasonending IR on Tuesday. … CB Nick Marshall (illness), OLB Lorenzo Mauldin (ankle) and DT Steve McLendon (hamstring) did not practice, in addition to Forte.
