It is fantasy championship week in most leagues … and that’s a problem. Among the hurdles of fantasy football are byes and the end of the season — when shutdowns and “resting for the playoffs” end up skewing the game. Of course, one person’s weakness is another’s opportunity, so let’s take a look at a couple key injuries ahead of this week:

Cam Newton always is going to be a risk for impact injuries. Last week might have been the most worrisome, as a drive to the ground injured his shoulder. The team is worried he has a small tear in hi s labrum, which led to a lot of pain and weakness. It is an injury that doesn’t go away. In fact, this is very similar to another oft-hit QB, Andrew Luck. Luck also has a torn labrum after his shoulder injury last season, and the Colts have managed it well. Both QBs still can make all the throws, but they probably won’t make all the practices. These are known conditions that if they are allowed to get worse, can suck the value out of two of the NFL’s top players quickly. Team context matters. Jul io

Jones is expected to play. Jones’ turf toe still drops his ceiling a bit, but it is hard to bench him in a title matchup. The worry is he might be pulled early and put up a zero. The Falcons would love to have the bye, so they will push a bit more than the Bengals, who could be spoilers at best. That means they are less likely to push A.J. Green if there is any pull left in his injured hamstring. Again, it is hard to bench a guy you probably drafted very high, but Green is more likely to put up the low score than Jones just because of where his team is at.

Jared Goff suffered a concussion last week, and the system played out on TV. The spotter saw his head hit and called for a check. Team physician Neal ElAttrache, one of the top surgeons in the world, gave him a quick check, and boom, he was back in the locker room for further testing. This is how the system is supposed to work. Goff cleared the concussion protocol quickly, having few symptoms after the game, so he is ready to go, which is good news for the Rams and for fantasy teams given his production and help for Todd Gurley.
