LeVert’s growing confidence bright spot for BK

- By BRIAN LEWIS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — There weren’t many positives from the Nets’ 118-95 loss to the Wizards. OK, maybe just one. But the play of rookie Caris LeVert was it.

“Super positive. I just said that to our coaches, his energy, how hard he plays, how fast he is, his athleticism, how aggressive he is,’’ Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said. “So that’s the positive we take out of [it], that he’s really starting to grow in front of our eyes. That’s good to see.”

LeVert, who never scored in double-figures before, had a career-high 12 points on efficient 4-of-5 shooting that is sure to buoy his confidence.

“I do think it will,’’ Atkinson said. “When you’re playing well, guys were giving him the ball, and he was bringing it up. You saw his versatility out there and what he can do, he can handle the ball, he can make passes, and I like how aggressive he is. He had that dunk, or dunk attempt. He could’ve shot a pullup, but took it to the rim, got to the free throw line. So a lot of positives from Caris.”

The first-round pick — who missed much of his senior season at Michigan and the early part of his rookie campaign with a foot injury — looked athletic, energetic and aggressive. He grabbed three boards, had two steals and drew a charge.

“I just felt comfortable out there offensively. [Randy] Foye was really doing a great job with me, slowing the game down for me, telling me where to pick my spots and things like that,’’ LeVert said. “I’d say for sure [I’m] thinking less about plays and thinking more about making plays, I’d say. I have my spacing and things like that down. Now [I’m] just trying to make plays out there.”

The Nets are an NBAworst 1-16 on the road.

“We obviously didn’t find the answer,’’ Atkinson said. “It’s a learning experience for our group, for me as a first-year head coach, what we can do better on the road. I can tell you this, we’re going to try [something different]. ”

Otto Porter, who had 12 points, is set to be a restricted free agent. The feeling in Washington is the Wizards small forward will be of interest to Nets general manager Sean Marks.

Jeremy Lin (hamstring), Chris McCullough (D-League) and Joe Harris (hip) were out.
