CAPT. OUTRAGEOUS

Slam at B’klyn commander’s rape remarks

- By AMANDA WOODS

City Hall and the NYPD are ripping into a Brooklyn precinct commander who said date rapes are “not a trend that we’re too worried about” — at least not compared to the “abomination” of rapes committed by strangers.

“Rape is rape,” said mayoral spokesman Eric Phillips, while the NYPD rushed to clarify that all sex assaults are taken seriously by police.

“Every report of rape is thoroughly investigated by specially trained detectives in the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit,” police spokesman Stephen Davis said, referring to the remarks by Capt. Peter Rose, commander of Greenpoint’s 94th Precinct.

“All complaints of rape and other types of sexual crimes are taken seriously whether they are committed by domestic partners, acquaintances or strangers,” Davis said.

Still, Rose does not face disciplinary action, a police official told The Post — “due to the fact that these comments may have been misstated and misinterpreted.” The official asked not to be identified by name.

In remarks published Friday morning, Rose had responded to the alarming 62 percent jump in sex attacks in his jurisdiction over the last year by scoffing that almost all of the attacks were date rapes.

In an interview with DNAinfo, Rose admitted that he gives priority to catching fiends who rape strangers, not those who attack dates or other acquaintances.

“Some of them were Tinder, some of them were hookup sites, some of them were actually co-worker — it’s not a trend that we’re too worried about because out of 13 [sex attacks], only two were true ‘stranger’ rapes,” he told the news Web site.

“If there’s a true ‘stranger’ rape — a random guy picks up a stranger off the street — those are the troubling ones,” he blathered.

“That person has, like no moral standards,” he said.

At a meeting of the precinct’s community council Wednesday night, Rose apparently stuck his foot farther down his throat.

“They’re not total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the street,” he said of Greenpoint’s hike in acquaintance rapes, DNAinfo reported.

Public Advocate Letitia James on Friday joined in condemning Rose’s remarks, saying in a statement that she was “extremely disturbed” by the comments.

“Too often, victims of rape and sexual crimes do not come forward because of fear that their claims won’t be taken seriously, and these comments perpetuate those concerns,” James said.
