Cop sorry for rape remark

Capt. scoffed at date assaults

- By DANIEL PRENDERGAST

The NYPD captain slammed for saying the increase in date rapes in his Brooklyn precinct was “not a trend that we’re too worried about” apologized for his comments Monday.

Peter Rose, commanding officer of the 94th Precinct in Greenpoint, tweeted that he was sorry for making statements last week that appeared to minimize rape cases in which the victim and attacker know each other.

“I deeply regret the statement I made last week about rape,” Rose tweeted.

“I failed to communi- cate accurately how I respond to reports of rape, and the actions the department as a whole takes.

“Every rape, whether it is perpetrated by a stranger or someone known to [the victim], is fully investigated,’’ he added. “We make no distinction in our response. My comments suggested otherwise, and for that I apologize.”

Last week, Rose scoffed when asked about a 62 percent increase in sex attacks in his jurisdiction over the past year — dismissing the majority as date rapes.

“Some of them were Tinder, some of them were hookup sites, some of them were actually coworker — it’s not a trend that we’re too worried about because out of 13 [sex attacks], only two were true stranger rapes,” he told DNAinfo.

“If there’s a true stranger rape — a random guy picks up a stranger off the street — those are the troubling ones,” he said.

Jane Manning, an official with the National Organization for Women, said her group will still protest outside Rose’s station house Tuesday to condemn his statement, but added that NOW is glad he apologized.
