A gang of muggers was caught on surveillance video shoving an 83year-old Bronx man to the ground and then mercilessly kicking and punching him before fleeing with his wallet, cops said Monday.

Shaken victim Basil Johnson told The Post that he was walking along Macombs Road in Morris Heights on his way home from a pal’s house at 9 p.m. Friday when he was ambushed on the deserted street.

“It’s usually a busy street, but no one was there when I was walking,” Johnson said while at a DMV office getting a driver’s license to replace his stolen one.

“I only saw one guy standing perfectly still by the parked cars. As soon as I passed him, I felt someone on my back, and the beating began.”

After knocking Johnson to the sidewalk, one of the men continued punching him while the other two kicked him about the body, the video shows.

The thugs swiped Johnson’s wallet — which contained around $240, his license and several credit cards — and fled.

Johnson was treated at a nearby hospital for his injuries, which included bruising to the right side of his chest.

He man said the attack happened so fast that he was not able to get a good look at his attackers before they took off running on Macombs Road.

“I don’t remember them saying anything of meaning,” Johnson said. “They hit me, and when they were finished, I heard one of them saying, ‘Let’s go, let’s go!’ That was all.”

He said he hopes his assailants are caught.

“If they catch them, I just want to know why’’ they did it, he said.

“It is disgusting. They obviously don’t care about age, since they’re in their 20s and I’m 83,” he added.

Johnson’s 76-year-old wife, Hyacinth, said she plans to make a few changes because of the incident.

“Now I won’t let him out at night,” she said.

Johnson added that he at least will be more vigilante while walking around.

“It’s The Bronx,” he said. “This happens all the time. I just need to be more careful and avoid people on the streets at night.”

Police described all three suspects as young men who were between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8. They were all wearing dark-colored hoodies and light-colored sweatpants.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hot line at (800) 577-TIPS. Calls are confidential.
