SJU recruit arrested for robbery — again

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

This was always the risk of St. John’s recruiting Zach Brown. It may never get the reward.

The talented but troubled 7-foot-1 center from Miami was arrested Sunday morning on charges of robbery at a Walgreens in Hollywood, Fla., according to a police report obtained by The Post.

St. John’s is gathering information before making a decision on how it plans to proceed, a source said. Brown, a four-star, top-50 recruit, signed a National Letter of Intent in November. It appears likely St. John’s eventually will part ways with Brown, though that has yet to be decided.

“The department of athletics thoroughly reviews allegations of misconduct for both current and prospective student-athletes,” St. John’s said in a statement. “Per university policy and as required by law, publicly commenting on particular student cases is prohibited.”

St. John’s did its due diligence, speaking to Brown’s former coaches, teachers and his attorney, sources said at the time of his commitment. School higher-ups signed off on the gamble. Still, the news doesn’t come as a shock to St. John’s, which knew the situation was “volatile,” a source said, when it took Brown’s commitment.

Even before this latest arrest, it was questionable whether Brown ever would get to the Queens school, because of a May 2016 arrest for robbery and credit card fraud, along with the process to qualify academically.

“Everyone was on board with taking a risk,” the source said.

Miami talk-show host Andy Slater first reported Brown, along with his brother, Clayton, was arrested for first-degree petit theft, a misdemeanor.
