Trump Gets Tough: Freezing All Refugees

-

President Trump’s executive order barring refugees from seven majority-Muslim countries looks very much like an executive order signed during Barack Obama’s presidency (“Don: The ban will play on,” Jan. 31).

The outrage over Trump’s order is just a hysterical exaggeration to paralyze the new administration. Democrats are just engaging in more mean-spirited sabotage. Don Mills Jackson, NJ

In 1939, the MS St. Louis left Hamburg, Germany, just before the start of World War II. On board were over 900 Jewish refugees fleeing persecution.

The passengers were denied entry to Cuba, the United States and Canada. The ship had to return to a hostile Europe and while about 300 passengers were granted safety in the United Kingdom, the rest had to find places in continental Europe — with over 250 ultimately falling victim to the Holocaust.

This was a black stain on our history just like slavery, the treatment of Native Americans and our internment of Japanese-Americans. Are we going to repeat our past mistakes? Mike Caggiano San Mateo, Calif.

Funny, I didn’t hear any screaming when President Obama put a sixmonth ban on immigrants from Iraq.

I didn’t hear anything when President Obama issued an executive order requiring Cuban refugees to be sent back to his new buddy Raúl Castro.

Now that President Trump has set up a 90day hold on allowing people into our country from some troublesome nations (a list the Obama administration compiled) people are deciding to protest. Christine Fennes West Hempstead

Instead of being so anxious to spend our tax dollars on illegal immigrants and refugees, perhaps the Democratic senators who are upset about Trump’s executive order should pay some attention to elderly Americans whose standard of living has been devastated by policies their party backed for the past eight years.
