Meltdown at Berkeley: What About Free Speech?

-

These protesters still haven’t gotten over the fact that Hillary Clinton lost and that President Trump is fulfilling his promises to the people who elected him (“Berkeley’s Bullies,” Editorial, Feb. 3).

We should think twice before we send our children to universities that don’t allow freedom of speech.

Since November, the diatribe from the left has reached a ridiculous point.

The events at Berkeley were as low as it can get. But that’s the way colleges are these days.

Watching one protest after another, especially those targeting someone’s right to freely express his views, no matter what those views may be, reminds me of the quote from William F. Buckley: “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.”

Peter Kelly Hazlet, NJ

Most people from outside the United States can’t believe how our colleges are run.

Instead of encouraging a diversity of ideas and viewpoints, some students are forced to believe in and follow a doctrine that is set forth by a group of professors.

These schools have become nothing more than a breeding ground for radicals and anti-American propaganda.

Joseph Beyhl Holtsville

The groups that are protesting free speech are the real fascists.

They’re anti-American, anti-free speech and against our First Amendment.

Just because this group would like to think of itself as liberal and progressive doesn’t make it so.

Bob Fishman Elmsford

The protesters’ argument is that they want to stop “hate speech.”

However, they hurl hate-filled invectives and turn to violent protests to make their point.

The worst part is that they do it at universities, which are supposed to be bastions of diverse ideas and free speech. This behavior is utterly ludicrous.

Where have all the old-time, open-minded liberals who used to protect the expression of ideas gone?
