The day after his dramatic Super Bowl victory, Tom Brady spoke for the first time about his mother Galynn’s illness after it was revealed overnight she was diagnosed 18 months ago with cancer. The Patriots quarterback gave positive reports on her recovery.

Though it was widely known last week Galynn was dealing with health issues — especially when Brady grew emotional speaking about his family on consecutive days leading up to the Super Bowl — her exact illness remained unknown publicly until early Monday when MMQB.com reported the cancer diagnosis. Patriots owner Robert Kraft also told NESN that Brady’s mother has been going through chemotherapy and radiation treatment for her illness.

“Mom’s doing better,” Brady said on WEEI radio in Boston on Monday morning. “Our prayers are with her. She’s the best mom in the world. It was nice to win for her.

“The prognosis is good and she’s not quite through it, but hopefully there was some healing energy from last night. We love her so much.”

MMQB.com reported Galynn wasn’t cleared to travel until a checkup Wednesday. But there she was Sunday night, wearing a wrap over her head, celebrating with her superstar son. She also was accompanied Sunday night by sonin-law Kevin Youkilis, the former Red Sox and Yankees third baseman.

“I’m overwhelmed!” Galynn said after the win. “I was just praying. All I did was pray, the whole game, just pray.”

Brady also addressed his mother’s health at a press conference Monday morning when Roger Goodell presented him with his Super Bowl LI MVP trophy.

“She’s been through a lot,” Brady said. “Way harder than what I went through [Sunday] night, what the team went through.

“All families go through challenging times personally. But she has a lot of support and a lot of love. I’m just happy [Sunday] night to be able to celebrate with her.”
