Prez’s jabs at judges irk Gorsuch

- By BOB FREDERICKS

President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee told a Democratic senator he found it “disheartening” and “demoralizing” when the commander in chief slammed federal judges over a court order blocking his travel ban.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (DConn.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters about Neil Gorsuch’s comments after meeting privately Wednesday with the high-court nominee, a federal appellate judge in Colorado.

“He certainly expressed to me that he is disheartened by demoralizing, abhorrent comments made by President Trump about the judiciary,” Blumenthal said at the Capitol.

“But I will be asking for more specific and forthcoming comments to those kinds of questions before I determine how I will vote.”

Ron Bonjean, a spokesman helping Gorsuch during the confirmation process, backed up Blumenthal’s account.

Trump on Feb. 4 criticized a Seattle federal jurist who blocked his travel ban as a “so-called judge.”

On Wednesday, the president argued that his power to limit immigration shouldn’t be challenged in courts — and called a San Francisco appellate court’s Tuesday hearing on his ban “disgraceful.”

“I listened to a bunch of stuff last night on television that was disgraceful,” Trump said of the hourlong hearing.

“I think it’s a sad day. I think our security is at risk today. And it will be at risk until such time as we are entitled and get what we are entitled to as citizens of this country,” Trump said, speaking to a group of police chiefs and sheriffs.

“It couldn’t have been written any more precisely,” Trump said of his order.

“It’s not like, ‘Oh, gee, we wish it were written better!’ It’s written beautifully,” he went on, adding that even “a bad highschool student would understand this.”
