‘DRIVE TIME’ CHRIS
Eyed for WFAN gig
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie could be motoring to an on-air drive time job. The lame-duck, Bridgegate-stained pol would be a top candidate to replace WFAN’s Mike Francesa if Christie wants the coveted radio gig, a top station official said. “I would certainly at least want to consider him,” WFAN program director Mark Chernoff told Jersey’s Record newspaper. “If he’s interested and we’re interested, it’s worth pursuing.” Francesa has already announced he’s leaving CBS-owned WFAN when his contract expires at the end of the year — opening up the 1-to-6:30 p.m. drive-time radio slot. Christie (inset), who’ll be term-limited out of office next January, is one of the Garden State’s most prominent sports fans. He regularly calls into WFAN’s morning-drive show “Boomer & Carton.” Instead of backing the Jersey-based Giants and Jets, the Newark-born politician shamelessly roots for the Dallas Cowboys and openly rubs elbows with team owner Jerry Jones.
CBS spokeswoman Jaime Saberito on Wednesday declined to elaborate on Chernoff ’s comments.
“If he’s [Christie] interested and we’re interested, then we’ll have those conversations,” she said. “I can’t confirm right now if conversations are or are not happening.”
A Christie spokesman refused to comment Wednesday.
The governor’s job hunt in January will be weighed down by his record-breaking unpopularity. The governor had a meager job-approval rating of 18 percent, a Fairleigh Dickinson University Public Mind Poll found in late January — the lowest number that poll had ever recorded for a sitting governor.
Christie’s popularity tumbled following his failed White House run and ongoing ties to Bridgegate.
Two former Christie aides have been convicted of ordering the closure of entrance lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee in 2013 as political payback to that town’s mayor not endorsing Christie for re-election.
