Plawecki a work in progress

- By MIKE PUMA

PORT ST. LUCIE — Kevin Plawecki would like to think he is better than what he has shown the Mets over the past two seasons.

The pressure is off now. The Mets have Travis d’Arnaud and Rene Rivera lined up at catcher to begin the Grapefruit League season, leaving the 26-year-old Plawecki to spend spring training working on his craft.

In 48 games in the major leagues last season Plawecki had a disappointing . 197/. 298/. 265 slash line with one homer and 11 RBIs. It followed an equally anemic 2015 season. “I believe I’m a starting catcher in this league and whether it’s here, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Plawecki said Thursday. “I have got to continue to work hard and bust my [butt], and I am going to continue doing that.” Plawecki arrived from the minors two years ago as a solidly regarded hitter, but the Mets have not seen that player. Last year, he hit .300 in 55 games at Triple-A Las Vegas. “I think getting sent down at the end of the year was the best thing for me,” Plawecki said. “Just to work on the swing that me and [hitting coach] Kevin Long had been working on. I went down there to really improve and just get consistent at-bats using what we were working on, so it’s nice to get that consistency and I’m not too worried about results.”

D’Arnaud, Michael Conforto, Wilmer Flores and Juan Lagares will be the notable Mets players making the 2 ½-hour bus ride to Fort Myers for the Grapefruit League opener against the Red Sox on Friday.

Seth Lugo, Rafael Montero and Marcos Molina are among the pitchers scheduled to see action for the Mets.

Manager Terry Collins said he plans to use his Opening Day starting lineup — with the exception of David Wright playing third base and Neil Walker — for the exhibition home opener on Saturday. Wright may be inserted in the lineup at DH, and Walker has requested an extra day before playing his first game.

The Mets officially changed the name of their spring training home from Tradition Field to First Data Field.
