Lugo has eyes on 5th spot

- By DAN MARTIN

FORT MYERS, Fla. — If the season goes as planned for the Mets, they won’t be looking for another starting pitcher.

All that means is for Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz to stay healthy and Zack Wheeler to regain his length following Tommy John surgery.

In the meantime, Seth Lugo will look to take Wheeler’s spot until he’s ready to get back into the rotation, battling Robert Gsellman — among others.

“Every spring I’ve come in, there have been guys above me,” Lugo said. “It’s the same as it’s always been. We’ll see what happens.”

Lugo did his part in Friday’s spring training opener for the Mets, a 3-2 win over the Red Sox at JetBlue Park.

The right-hander tossed two scoreless innings. He struck out three, walked two and didn’t give up a hit in his 36-pitch outing.

Lugo split time between the rotation and the bullpen last season and Terry Collins wasn’t ready to predict where Lugo could end up.

“We’ve got to wait to see what happens at the end of spring,” Collins said. “If our entire staff stays healthy and we’ve got spots, we’ve got to protect ourselves.”

Michael Conforto isn’t the only Met to come in looking to erase 2016.

Travis d’Arnaud went 2for-2 and helped guide Mets pitchers through four no-hit innings before leaving in the fifth.

D’Arnaud didn’t put much importance on his first day’s work — even if it did go well.

“Fortunately I was able to get results,’’ d’Arnaud said. “For me, it was more about trusting the process.”

Like d’Arnaud, Collins said he understands it’s a lengthy process.

“They’re working on some things,” the manager said of d’Arnaud and Conforto. “They came into camp determined to get better and from the first day, I sure liked what I saw out of both guys.”
