Trubisky measures up well
INDIANAPOLIS — It sure sounds as if finding an NFL quarterback is a game of inches.
There were concerns Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina would not measure up this week at the NFL Scouting Combine. He went through college listed at 6-foot-3, but some NFL scouts feared he might not stand taller than 6-1. Well, Trubisky came in at 6-2 ¹/8 when measured.
“I think that’s great,’’ said Browns coach Hue Jackson, whose team owns the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft and, as always, is looking for a starting quarterback. “It’s good that he’s over 6-2. We all have a profile for what we like a quarterback to be, and I think you kind of work through that.’’
Asked what he viewed as the ideal height he looks for in a quarterback, Jackson smiled and said, “6-2.’’
Which is pretty much Trubisky’s exact height.
“Yeah, I got a note today from somebody over there he measured over 6-2, so he made himself some money today, I promise you,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said.
“I think a guy has to be about 6-2 to play in this league,’’ Jackson said. “The special guys, I don’t want to take anything away from any of the other quarterbacks — there have been guys who have played in this league who are not 6-2, but the majority of the guys who have played are 6-2 or a little bit better and that’s just what I like in a quarterback.”
The Browns are “strongly considering’’ drafting Trubisky with the No. 1 pick, according to Cleveland.com.
The Browns have three quarterbacks on their roster: Robert Griffin III, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan. They own the No. 1 and No. 12 pick in the draft.
Jackson did not exactly give RG3 a ringing endorsement when asked about him.
“Obviously Robert’s on our roster right now,’’ said Jackson, who finished 1-15 in his first season as the Browns head coach. “I think there are some things that he did well, some things he needs to continue to improve at, and we’re going to keep working with him until we don’t.’’
